Real numbers, gathered with care
BorderStat turns scattered official records into one calm, comparable and honest picture of migration, refugees and border-related state spending — built by a small international core team, backed by hundreds of volunteers, and presented in the most comfortable way we could manage.
Why we built this
We exist to give one of the most debated subjects of our time the clarity it deserves.
Instead of contradictory headlines and buried spreadsheets, BorderStat offers a single place where every figure is traceable, every definition is explained, and nothing is invented to fill a gap. Our team spent more than nine months gathering, cleaning and reconciling statistics so that anyone — a student, a journalist, a policymaker or a curious neighbour — can understand the real situation in minutes.
This began as, and remains, a personal project of a lifetime — built to last and free for everyone.
Our sources
We publish only reported figures, drawn from official institutions and from independent, non-commercial companies and funds that share data in the public interest. We never take money to change a number, and we never fabricate estimates.
Official institutions
National statistics offices, government budgets and inter-governmental bodies such as UNHCR and the World Bank.
Non-commercial funds
Independent research funds and foundations that release data on a non-profit, public-interest basis.
Private non-commercial partners
Non-commercial organisations that contribute verified records under transparent, no-fee agreements.
Cross-checked & reconciled
Every value is compared across sources, with clear definitions, before it ever reaches the site.
How we handle numbers
- Official & non-commercial sources only — always clearly attributed.
- No fabricated estimates — when data is missing, we say so.
- Stock and flow kept separate — counts and movements are never mixed.
- State spending in USD — consistent definitions across every country.
- Revised openly — figures update as sources publish new data.
Our team
A small, international core team across nine countries — led by our founder and project manager, and supported by specialists in analytics, editorial, investigation and legal queries. Behind them stand hundreds of volunteers around the world who help us gather, translate and check the data.
