Crowborough Training Camp
Was: A Ministry of Defence training camp historically used by the British Army and various Cadet forces.
Crowborough Training Camp is a military facility in East Sussex owned by the Ministry of Defence. In January 2026, it was repurposed by the UK Home Office to serve as non-detained accommodation for single adult male asylum seekers.
Context & Approval: The conversion was enacted directly by the central government. Wealden District Council, the local authority, has publicly stated that the Home Office is bypassing the local planning process by using the Urgent Crown Development procedure to extend the site's use until January 2030. The council has formally requested that the Secretary of State not approve the extension without satisfying statutory tests.
Funding & Operation: The facility is funded by the UK central government. The daily operations, security, and wraparound support at the site are contracted out to a private company, Clearsprings Ready Homes, which runs the facility on behalf of the Home Office.
